Artist Statement & Biography
Patrick is a Contemporary Artist living in Melbourne, Derbyshire.
His love of travel at home and abroad is a constant source of inspiration to him influenced by colour, shape and light observed in landscape and marine settings
Patrick’s creative process begins on location taking the form of sketches and colour studies influenced by exploring the interaction of shape and line within the natural and man-made marine environment. The studies are then used as a foundation for translation onto canvas/board using oil or acrylic.
He enjoys using a more expressionistic rather than a realist approach to his work exploring images that contrast and juxtapose shape, line and colour allowing the viewer a means of discovering their own interpretation.
His work has been exhibited in Edinburgh, Derby, Birmingham, Leicester, London, Greece and France - more details can be found in ‘Exhibitions’
He finds when planning new work the preparatory sketches are an essential part of the process of recording images and building compositions. In recent times drawing large images have become final pieces in their own right. The freedom to create and enjoy the physical process of working on large scale charcoal drawings is a joy to him.
In 2023 Patrick entered and was accepted for the Drawing Award at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA). This is the first ever exhibition of it’s kind which the RBSA has undertaken, its principle being to exhibit great draughtsmanship and celebrate all forms of drawing. The work was a large charcoal marine image which was greatly admired and successfully sold during the exhibition.
